REPAIR AND RESTORATION SERVICES IN PA AND NJ

PRACTICAL REPAIRS. THOUGHTFUL RESTORATION. WORK THAT LASTS.

SolidStem provides repair and restoration services for homeowners across Pennsylvania and New Jersey. This includes structural carpentry, exterior repairs, detailed restoration work, and smaller residential projects that need more than a surface-level fix.

Some jobs involve visible wear. Others reveal deeper issues once the work begins. In both cases, the goal is the same: solve the actual problem, rebuild what needs to be rebuilt, and leave the home in better condition than before.

SKILLED REPAIR AND RESTORATION FOR REAL HOMEOWNER PROJECTS

I take on repair projects that require careful evaluation, sound judgment, and clean execution. That may mean rebuilding a damaged staircase, correcting failing exterior woodwork, restoring worn architectural details, or repairing parts of a structure that have been neglected for years.

These are not cosmetic quick fixes done just to make something look better for a few months. The focus is on durability, function, and long-term reliability.

This work also connects naturally with other services I provide, including new deck and patio construction and smaller handyman-type jobs for homeowners who need practical, well-executed work throughout the property.

Flat-Rate Estimates & On-Site Evaluation

Every deck and patio project begins with a detailed on-site evaluation.

The on-site estimate and project consultation fee is $75 and includes inspection, discussion of design options, structural considerations, and a flat-rate project proposal.

This ensures the project is properly planned before construction begins.

Recent Repairs and Restoration Projects

Charming Shed Makeover in Hackettstown, NJ

This project was all about transformation - not of function, but of form. The existing backyard shed was no longer used for storage or utility, but its central placement on the property meant it played a key visual role. The homeowner wanted to restore its charm and turn it into a polished architectural accent that complements the landscape.

The shed’s lower siding was rotting, the small porch was unstable and unsafe, and the paint was faded. We reinforced the foundation, built a brand-new decorative front porch, and added custom trim details to bring it all together. The structure didn’t need to be rebuilt from scratch - just thoughtfully repaired and reimagined to give it new life.

To avoid costly full siding replacement, we wrapped the base with decorative plywood panels, creating a crisp, uniform line around the shed. This approach saved both time and money while dramatically improving the look.

The new porch was carefully constructed using pressure-treated wood and custom balusters to match the shed’s cottage-like appearance. We painted

the entire exterior in bright white and vibrant blue - a cheerful, standout combination that feels both playful and classic.

We also handled several unexpected upgrades at no additional charge - like re-shimming the foundation and replacing damaged window trim - ensuring that every detail was solid and aligned. Even the original post caps were reused to save on materials while keeping the aesthetic intact.

Now, this no-longer-functional shed is a true focal point of the yard - a charming structure that elevates the entire property. A project like this proves that even the smallest buildings deserve beautiful design.

Custom Staircase Rebuild with Premium Carpentry

This project in East Stroudsburg, PA involved a full replacement of an outdated staircase that no longer matched the style or safety standards of the home. The original stair structure was carpeted and built from basic construction lumber, with inconsistent dimensions and visible wear. Our goal was to create a visually striking, safe, and durable staircase that complemented the character of the home.

The entire staircase was carefully disassembled, including old treads, risers, handrails, and balusters. We reinforced the frame where needed and addressed hidden structural issues that had caused squeaks and instability. Each component was measured and rebuilt using solid oak, including custom stair treads and hand-finished risers.

A standout feature of this staircase is the curved bottom step, crafted from laminated plywood and carefully veneered to match the finish of the upper treads. It was securely anchored and seamlessly integrated with the flooring. This required a high level of precision and craftsmanship, as curved elements must balance beauty with structural integrity.

All wood surfaces were stained to match the client’s existing décor and finished with multiple coats of professional-grade polyurethane for long-lasting protection. We used wood filler and touch-up stain to conceal fasteners and small imperfections, ensuring a clean, polished look from every angle.

The final touch included adjusting and reinstalling balusters, tuning the railing, and sealing all joints with flexible wood-tone caulk to prevent cracking. The result is a refined staircase that not only looks elegant but feels solid underfoot.

Whether you’re replacing worn stairs or envisioning a bold new design, we deliver exceptional quality with attention to detail at every step.

Elegant Staircase Railing Restoration in East Stroudsburg, PA

We recently completed a staircase restoration project for our client Maria in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The goal was to refresh and modernize the look of the entire stairway without replacing the main structural components. The result: a striking transformation that brought warmth, character, and elegance back to the heart of the home.

The original railing system showed significant wear, especially on the handrail and balusters. Instead of full replacement, we carefully removed the existing paint and finish, sanded down every surface, and applied a rich wood stain that highlighted the natural grain of the handrail. The balusters and trim received a clean white finish, creating a beautiful contrast and classic aesthetic.

Precision craftsmanship was key in this project. Each baluster was carefully inspected, secured, or replaced where necessary to ensure long-term stability. We repaired joint transitions, eliminated creaks, and adjusted the geometry of some of the curved sections for a flawless visual flow. The finished staircase now looks brand new-without losing its original character.

One of the most challenging aspects was working around the existing flooring and curved bottom tread. With meticulous attention to detail, we preserved the shape and ensured that the restored railing seamlessly aligned with the steps and flooring below.

This project is a perfect example of how even an older staircase can be brought back to life with skilled restoration rather than full replacement. If you’re looking to refresh your stairway or give your railings a timeless look, reach out—we’d be happy to help bring your vision to life.

Deck Restoration and Full Refinish Project in Stroudsburg, PA

This deck in Stroudsburg, PA renovation project was a comprehensive, multi-stage restoration that required technical precision and careful execution at every step. The deck was elevated approximately 11 feet above ground, which significantly increased the complexity of surface preparation, board replacement, and painting work. My task was not just to improve the appearance of the structure, but to restore its integrity, extend its lifespan, and deliver a finish that would withstand the region’s harsh weather conditions.

The project began with a full pressure-washing of all surfaces to remove dirt, mildew, and old loose coating. Once the deck was cleaned and dried, I replaced several rotten boards that had deteriorated over time. Every board was inspected individually to ensure structural safety. Preparation also included scraping, sanding, and smoothing all peeling sections, ensuring the surface was ready to receive a new protective finish.

One of the most labor-intensive parts of the project was refinishing the underside of the deck. The lower section received a dedicated protective coating that shields the structure from moisture and decay - a step that many contractors skip due to difficulty. Working at an 11-foot height, I applied a full protective stain and sealant to the entire underside, strengthening the deck from below and ensuring long-term durability.

To protect the client’s property, all siding and house surfaces were carefully masked using professional-grade 3M plastic and tape. The setup fully covered the walls, downspouts, and surrounding areas, allowing safe and efficient work with a paint sprayer. Because of the detailed masking and controlled spraying, the finish came out uniform, smooth, and free of overspray.

The upper deck surface, railings, and balusters received two coats of high-quality exterior stain, applied by a combination of sprayer and hand finishing for maximum coverage and precision. The result is a clean, refreshed deck with consistent color, improved protection, and a renewed structural feel.

This project required a total of three full working days, reflecting the depth of preparation, the height of the structure, and the detailed craftsmanship applied at every stage.

New Room Built Inside in East Stroudsburg, PA

This project transformed an unused section of a garage into a completely new, fully insulated, fully finished interior room. The area originally had no walls, no ceiling structure, no insulation, and no doorway. The goal was to create a quiet, comfortable room that looks and feels like part of the main home.

I began by building the entire framing system from the ground up. All walls, ceiling joists, and structural lines were measured, designed, and assembled by hand to form the footprint of the new room. Once the frame was complete, I installed insulation throughout the walls and ceiling to ensure proper temperature control and sound reduction.

A new doorway was added as part of the buildout. I framed the opening, installed a prehung door, adjusted all hardware, and integrated the door into the new drywall surface for a clean, finished look.

After framing and insulation, I installed drywall on all walls and the ceiling, reinforced the seams, and applied multiple coats of compound. Each surface was sanded smooth to prepare the room for finishing. Once the surfaces were ready, I primed and painted the entire interior, giving the new room a clean, modern appearance.

The result is a fully functional room built entirely inside a garage - framed, insulated, drywalled, and finished by a single craftsman from start to finish. This project shows how unused garage space can become a bright, comfortable, and valuable extension of the home.

Ceiling Replacement and Interior Upgrade in Honesdale, PA

This ceiling renovation project transformed an uneven, damaged, and outdated surface into a clean, modern, structurally reliable finish. The original ceiling had multiple problem areas, including cracked seams, sagging sections, and years of patchwork repairs. Restoring it required a full replacement rather than spot-fixing to ensure long-term stability and a flawless appearance.

The project began with careful removal of the old ceiling panels, followed by full protection of the client’s home using floor-to-ceiling plastic containment. Once the structure was exposed, I installed new drywall sheets with precise alignment to eliminate unevenness and future movement. All seams were taped and finished with multiple coats of joint compound, then sanded to a perfectly smooth, paint-ready surface.

After surface preparation, the ceiling was primed and painted for a bright, even finish. The decorative wooden beams were cleaned, refinished where needed, and reinstalled in their original positions, restoring the character of the room while maintaining a fresh, updated look.

Despite the complexity of working around existing trim, wall paneling, and the room’s layout, the result is a seamless, modern ceiling that elevates the entire space.

Deck Saved and Sealed in Reeders, PA

This project focused on restoring and protecting an aging outdoor deck that had begun to show signs of moss, mildew, and early-stage rot. The goal was to extend the life of the existing structure, improve safety, and give the deck a fresh, clean look - all without replacing the entire system.

I began with a deep pressure wash using a professional cleaning solution designed to kill moss and lift built-up dirt and organic growth. This crucial step removed years of weather exposure and prepped the wood for treatment. A small section of rotted board was replaced with pressure-treated lumber, carefully matched to the existing layout.

Next, I applied a transparent preservative with fungicide to the underside of the deck - a step many contractors skip - to protect the hidden areas most vulnerable to moisture and rot. The visible surface was then stained and sealed with a high-quality exterior stain that also included a fungicide, creating a durable barrier against future damage.

The result is a deck that not only looks revitalized but is now well-protected from the elements. Projects like this are a great example of how proper cleaning and treatment can save a deck from costly replacement - and bring out its natural beauty.

Porch Railing Installation in Hackettstown, NJ

This custom porch railing installation was completed for a senior homeowner who needed a safe and sturdy way to access the front steps. The house originally had no railings at all, and we were hired to design and install new wood railings that match the style of the home while providing full structural support.

The job required secure mounting into existing concrete steps, which meant additional reinforcement for strength and safety. Each post was precisely anchored, and the entire structure was leveled and braced to ensure durability and everyday usability.

To create a cohesive look, the new railings were stained in a light gray tone, carefully selected to coordinate with the house’s gray siding. While wood and siding materials naturally differ, the finish creates a close visual match that blends beautifully into the home’s exterior.

This project is a great example of custom exterior carpentry that enhances both safety and curb appeal—ideal for homeowners who want quality craftsmanship and peace of mind.

Kitchen Refinishing & Butcher Block Restoration in Easton, PA

This project was a full-scope kitchen upgrade focused on restoring beauty and durability to an existing space without a complete remodel. The client wanted a cleaner, more refined look, while retaining the existing layout. I handled the entire project solo - from prep to finishing - with close attention to detail and high-end materials.

The primary task involved repainting all kitchen cabinets. Each door and drawer front was carefully removed, sanded, and refinished using professional-grade techniques. I used a high-quality enamel that delivers a smooth, factory-like finish. The result was a sharp, durable surface that refreshed the entire room.

A major challenge was the restoration of a damaged butcher block countertop. The surface had deep cuts, burn marks, and epoxy-filled gouges. I performed a deep planing and sanding of the wood to remove imperfections and bring back the natural texture of the block. Once the surface was even, I applied a Minwax oil-based stain to enhance the grain and protect the wood.

To complete the kitchen transformation, I installed a vertical butcher block panel as a side accent - a detail that required precision fitting and secure mounting. I also replaced outdated moldings, improving transitions between surfaces and giving the kitchen a finished, polished appearance.

Finally, I treated all butcher block surfaces with a penetrating tinted oil that enriched the tone of the wood while providing long-term protection. Every corner, seam, and joint was carefully sealed and detailed. As always, I left the workspace spotless.

This project showcases the level of craftsmanship I bring to every job: expert-level woodwork, meticulous painting, and durable, attractive finishes that hold up to daily use.

Peel-and-stick backsplash installation in Coopersburg, PA

Sometimes a “simple DIY project” turns out to be much more complicated than expected.

This kitchen backsplash project in Coopersburg, PA started exactly that way. The homeowner bought peel-and-stick plastic tiles and planned to install them himself. At first it seemed straightforward, but after several attempts the tiles started going crooked, some pieces were ruined, and it became clear the process wasn’t as easy as advertised.

He even bought a tile cutter, assuming it would help. Unfortunately, that type of cutter is designed for ceramic tile, not thick plastic backsplash panels. After struggling with the installation for a while, he decided to call a professional.

According to the manufacturer’s instructions, the tiles should be cut with a utility knife. I came prepared with a set of very sharp carbide blades, expecting that to work well. In reality, the plastic turned out to be much thicker and tougher than expected. Even those blades struggled to cut through it, and each cut was taking a long time.

To make the process more efficient and precise, I switched to using a table saw with a fine-finish blade. The difference was dramatic. Cuts became cleaner, faster, and much more accurate. For outlet openings and detailed areas around fixtures, I used a multi-tool with different blades to shape the pieces precisely.

Even with the proper tools and experience, the installation still took about seven hours. At one point it honestly felt like installing a traditional ceramic tile backsplash might have been easier than dealing with this thick plastic material.

In the end, everything lined up cleanly and the final result looks sharp and modern. Most importantly, the homeowner was happy with how the kitchen turned out.

Sometimes the material looks simple on the box, but achieving a professional result still requires the right tools, patience, and experience. If you started a DIY project and realized it’s harder than expected, feel free to send me a message. I’m always happy to help finish the job properly.

Garage Wall Repair After Vehicle Impact in Hazleton, PA

During what seemed like minor exterior damage, I uncovered a serious structural issue: a triple king stud behind the garage wall had shifted 3 inches due to a car impact.

Cable Railing Upgrade in Newton, NJ

This porch railing upgrade was completed for a homeowner looking to modernize the appearance of their front porch while maintaining safety and functionality. The existing vinyl top rails were preserved, and outdated balusters were replaced with a sleek, low-maintenance cable railing system.

The project required careful removal of the old components without damaging the structural elements. Each post was reinforced and precisely aligned to ensure the cables would tension correctly and remain secure over time. The result is a strong, stable railing system that meets safety standards without compromising aesthetics.

By combining clean, horizontal stainless steel cables with the original vinyl top rails, the new system creates a lighter, more open feel—perfect for enhancing views and improving curb appeal. The look is both classic and modern, complementing a wide range of exterior finishes.

Working solo, I completed the entire process with high attention to detail, from layout and anchoring to final cleanup. I always use high-quality materials to ensure long-term durability and a polished finish my clients can count on.

This type of railing upgrade is ideal for homeowners who want to refresh their porch or deck with something visually appealing, safe, and built to last.

Body shop office renovation in Mount Bethel, PA

This project in Mount Bethel, PA started with something very simple — assembling a large office desk for a local body shop. The owner initially hired me for that single task. After seeing how I work, he asked if I could help with several other improvements around the workspace.

What began as a simple furniture assembly quickly turned into a full refresh of the office area.

First, I assembled three additional desks to complete the workstation layout. Then I removed an old built-in wall air conditioner that was no longer needed. After removing the unit, I rebuilt the wall framing, insulated the opening, closed it from the inside, and restored the exterior siding so the repair would be invisible from outside.

Once the structural repair was finished, I moved on to improving the interior.

I redesigned the front desk using decorative slat panels to create a clean, modern wood-accent look. I used the same panels on part of the wall so the design would feel cohesive instead of random.

For the accent wall, the owner wanted a strong visual feature. I first installed plywood panels and painted them black to create a solid base. After that I installed composite stone-look tiles over the surface to build a textured feature wall that now defines the space.

What started as a small desk assembly turned into a full workspace upgrade completed in four days. The shop now has a much more professional interior that reflects the quality of the work they do.

Projects often evolve this way. When clients see careful work and attention to detail, they start looking at other parts of the space that can be improved.

Custom Basement Door Replacement in Plains, PA

This basement entry upgrade was completed for a homeowner who needed to replace an old exterior door that no longer closed properly, had no functional handle, and still used an outdated lock without a key. Before starting, I presented three repair options: restoring the existing door, replacing only the door slab, or completing a full door-and-frame replacement. I recommended starting with the most economical option first and moving to the next level only if hidden rot or structural damage was discovered during demolition.

After removing the old door, I found that the existing frame was still solid overall, but the threshold was completely rotted. The original door was also thinner than modern standards, very old and dried out, and no compatible lockset could be found in stores. Because of that, the most practical solution was to replace the door slab, install new hinges and hardware, and build a new threshold from pressure-treated wood.

I purchased a solid wood door with extra material for trimming, since the existing frame was far from standard size and not perfectly straight. A large part of the work involved carefully fitting the new door into the old uneven opening. This required detailed trimming, repeated test-fitting, and precise adjustment to make sure the door would close properly, seal well, and operate smoothly.

Once the installation was complete, I painted both the door and the frame in a modern color to give the entry a clean, updated appearance. The result is a fully functional basement door that looks better, closes correctly, and provides the homeowner with reliable daily use.

This kind of project is a good example of why old door replacements often require more than a simple swap. Even when the frame can be saved, custom fitting, threshold rebuilding, and hardware upgrades are often necessary to achieve a durable final result.

Garage Window Replacement and Exterior Wall Repair in Easton, PA

This project in Easton, PA began as what seemed like a simple window replacement job - removing three old garage windows and installing new vinyl units. At first glance, it looked like a 3-4 hour project. But once demolition began, hidden issues inside the wall turned it into a much more involved repair.

The first major problem was water damage behind the old windows. Two sheets of wall sheathing were badly rotted and had to be replaced. To repair the structure properly, I removed sections of siding, installed new sheathing, wrapped the wall again with house wrap, and sealed all joints with butyl tape to restore weather protection before moving forward with the new windows.

Another challenge was sizing. The old windows were larger than modern vinyl replacements, so the framing had to be adjusted and carefully fitted to achieve a clean, level, and weather-tight installation. Each window was aligned, sealed, and installed to ensure proper operation and long-term durability.

When it came time to reinstall the siding, another issue appeared - the size difference between the old and new windows left about an inch of mismatch. Because the original siding had been discontinued, an exact color and profile match was no longer available. To make the repair look as clean as possible, I relocated an existing lower strip of siding to the more visible area and installed the new panel lower down where the difference would be far less noticeable. Since the homeowner already planned to replace the siding with manufactured stone later this summer, this worked very well as a clean temporary solution.

After the exterior was complete, I moved inside. Before installing trim, I rebuilt the window openings into clean rectangular shapes, applied tape and joint compound in two coats with sanding between coats, then installed the trim and prepared everything for paint. The homeowner handled the final painting.

What started as a basic window replacement became a full exterior repair and interior finishing project completed over three working days.

Acoustic Slat Wall Panel Installation in Easton, PA

This garage upgrade in Easton, PA focused on appearance rather than sound control. Although these felt-backed wood slat panels are commonly used for acoustic improvement, the homeowner chose them primarily for their clean, modern look and wanted them installed around the perimeter of the garage to create a more finished and custom interior.

The installation process itself is straightforward in principle, but the final result depends heavily on layout accuracy. I used construction adhesive together with drywall screws, which creates a very secure hold and keeps the panels firmly in place. To ensure the entire installation stayed perfectly aligned around the garage, I used a 360-degree laser level and established one consistent height line across all walls before mounting any panels.

That step made a major difference. In a space like a garage, even a small height variation becomes very noticeable once the slat lines continue from wall to wall. Precise layout was essential for a clean professional finish.

Once installed, the panels completely changed the feel of the space. What had been a plain garage interior now looks much more polished, intentional, and visually upgraded.

Basement Stair Replacement in Taylor, PA

Sometimes I come across basement staircases that are barely holding together — the kind where it feels like one more step could cause the whole structure to fail. This basement stair replacement project in Taylor, PA was exactly that case. The existing stairs were severely deteriorated, unsafe, and no longer reliable, so full replacement was the only practical solution.

I proposed a simple but very strong rebuild: a new staircase framed with pressure-treated wood and thick 2x11 stair treads. In a moisture-prone basement environment, pressure-treated lumber offers much better long-term durability than standard dry interior wood.

After removing the old staircase, I cleared the entire work area down to the concrete so I could start with a clean and stable base. I then cut the new stringers and anchored them to the concrete wall using 1/2 x 6 anchor bolts, while reinforcing the opposite side with a solid 4x4 support post.

The most challenging part of this custom stair rebuild was getting everything level inside an older home where nothing around it was straight. It took dozens of small adjustments and careful fitting to align the stringers correctly. In the end, every tread was installed level, and the finished basement stairs felt solid, stable, and safe.

At the final stage, I sanded the railing and completed the staircase with a clean, finished appearance.

Cathedral Window Trim and Interior Finish Carpentry in Dingmans Ferry, PA

This interior finish carpentry project in Dingmans Ferry, PA focused on completing the wall area around newly installed cathedral windows and the front door. The space had exposed framing, unfinished angled openings, and open wall sections that needed custom trim work, panel installation, and clean interior finishing to make the entire wall look complete.

This was not a basic wall patch. Because of the sloped upper window sections, multiple angle cuts, and the directional wall panel pattern, the installation required careful layout and precise fitting. I installed the wall panels, added the necessary blocking and support, and custom-fit each section around the cathedral-style upper windows and door opening.

To complete the project, I built custom casing around the upper windows and the front door, closed the open wall sections below the lower windows, and installed finish trim around the full window and door assembly. The goal was to create a clean, finished interior appearance that matched the character of the home and made the entire front wall look intentional and visually cohesive.

Projects like this depend on precision. With sloped glass, narrow trim areas, and multiple transitions, small layout errors become very noticeable. Careful angle fitting, clean trim carpentry, and consistent spacing were the key to getting a professional result.

Once finished, the entire wall looked significantly more polished and complete. What had been an unfinished window and door installation became a custom interior feature with clean lines and a finished appearance.
